PRESCHOOL 2003-2004

Our Mission

To provide developmentally appropriate activities and enriched experiences in a safe, nurturing, Judaic environment that encourages all children to explore and discover their expanding world so that they may successfully transition to school.

Dear Parents:
Welcome to Temple B'nai Israel Preschool. We are delighted and excited to include you and your child as part of our family.

Now in our 33rd year we believe that our early childhood program is unique in the Clearwater area. Through careful planning and the use of a broad based curriculum we hope to meet the different individual needs of our children.

Whether your child attends half day or utilizes our full day program, including before and after care, our school will provide an atmosphere that is nurturing, stimulating and encouraging.

At Temple B'nai Israel Preschool the philosophy behind our curriculum is that children learn best by doing. Our children participate in many exciting areas, which allow for individual creativity such as cooking, creative arts, music, science, dramatic play, fitness, early literacy and computers, outdoor play and exploration.

Our extended day enrichment programs offer opportunities for your child to participate in activities such as dance, gymnastics, karate, drama, crafts, and hands-on science, or to be exposed to a second language of Spanish and Hebrew. We are also offering American Sign Language this year.

TBI is a Certified Music With Mar School. All of the staff is extensively trained by Mar Harmon. The Mar Brain Based Music and Movement Curriculum is used throughout our school.

At Temple B'nai Israel Preschool we encourage children to learn at their own pace and in the way that is best suited to them. Our goal is to help your child become an enthusiastic learner, not only here at our preschool, but throughout his/her life.

We are extremely proud of our outstanding program, our energetic and talented staff, and our eager preschoolers.

Extended Day Activity Classes

As young children explore their ever expanding world they enjoy trying new activities. At the same time new things can be a bit scary and children feel most secure when they are in a place and with people they know. Our extended day program allows your child to experience a variety of enhancement activities in just such a setting. All of the classes are especially designed for the preschool child; they are not just reduced versions of programs originally begun for an older child. These fun activity classes also target important developmental skills so vital for success in school.

Dance: Children as young as two may be ready to enjoy dance with Ms. Betty Ann. Dance training enhances your child’s physical development, helping the body to be strong and well coordinated. Dance also helps to boost a child’s confidence, helps them to follow directions more easily and it’s just plain fun! Ms. Betty Ann of the Billings and Betty School of Dance, a dancer and teacher for over forty years, returns to teach this special program at our school.

Gymnastics: Our gymnastics program is offered through Bayside Gymnastics of Clearwater. They come to us bringing bars, beam, mats, springboard, hoops and mostly fun. Ms. Quentin teaches basic gymnastics skills that will enhance motor development, strengthen muscles and enhance your child’s confidence and body awareness. Children, as young as two, can enjoy this program.

Karate: Sensei Joe from VIP Professional Karate Center has a special program designed especially for his preschool students. Focus is on beginning Karate skills along with the concepts of respect, focus, loyalty, listening and doing your best. Students earn stripes on their belt for these and other skills learned. There is no testing or competition and Sensei is very serious about the no- hurting- others rule. Children must be at least three years old to attend.

Kids Cooking: Children love to mess around in the kitchen and children love to eat. What better combination could there be? Lots of hands- on yummy fun while instilling basic safety rules, learning about measurement and the process of putting things together. In addition to our edible delights students may also create special artwork from food and a recipe book to share with friends and family.

Music Theater: Music theater classes are structured in the development of movement, vocal skills, and imagination enhancement. Improvisation, characterization, rhythm and mime are used to encourage children to improvise without feeling silly. Through this process they learn freedom of movement and self expression. They enhance observation skills and learn to look at the specific and about cause and effect.

Book Bag Bunch: An early literacy program designed to make reading fun. Each book the group reads comes packed in a special book bag that is filled with games and projects related to the story. For example when they read “Looks Like Spilled Milk” they will race cotton puffs across the table while blowing through a straw. They will create their own puff pictures in paint and sing silly rhyming songs. Finally each child will have the chance to bring the book bag home to share. It will include a special parent page and a surprise activity for you to do with your child. Book Bag Bunch kids will also be writing stories on the computer and making books of their own.

Crafts: All children love to create. Here in our crafts class children will have the opportunity to work in various media and to experiment with spatial concepts and design. Students will try weaving place mats, cut and paste collages and paint clay pots. Projects may be ongoing and take several weeks to complete. A fun and messy class for all.

Discovery Kids: Race car painting and magnet pictures. Will it float and do raisins really dance? Building a volcano, exploding colors, spinning designs, and leaf rubbings. These are just a few of the activities of our “Discovery Kids”, a hands- on interactive science program. Our kids explore and investigate in the areas of nature and earth, light and sound, air and water, motion and energy, and reaction and matter. In addition to science discovery, children also enhance skills in measurement, counting, reporting, comparison, critical thinking and cause effect relationships.

Games Galore: As children gain confidence in playing with others their love of games will blossom. In games galore we focus on the fun of playing together, Lotto, Bingo, Memory, Hi Ho Cherrio to name a few. Children will also create a game of their own which will strengthen their emerging problem solving skills and their ability to follow directions. To make the rules children have to play by the rules.

Hebrew: In our Hebrew class the focus is on letter recognition, letter/ vowel sounds and vocabulary building. For example, Bet is the beginning letter of Brakhah (blessings) and Bayit is a house. Children will learn by using games, stories and songs. We will also learn how to write each letter and will use a special computer program to reinforce skills.

Spanish: Most experts agree that the first six years are the prime opportunity window for language development. In our Spanish language classes children are exposed to the sound and context of the language. Through stories, games, and songs they will learn simple phrases, colors, counting, body parts and the weather. Spanish will be offered twice each week, each class will cover similar material.

After School Program

Welcome to Temple B’nai Israel’s “Shalom Chaverim” after school program. We are pleased to be able to offer this program in partnership with the Pinellas County Jewish Day School. We believe that together we can make this a wonderful school year for your child.

We will be spending several hours each day with your child. He/ she will be cared for in a safe and secure environment that promotes Jewish values and practices. Our staff will consist of experienced youth counselors and early childhood teachers. All have had fingerprint and background checks. Our philosophy is to support and encourage each individual child to ensure they achieve at their highest potential.

Our daily schedule will provide a snack/ social time, quiet, homework or study time, a craft or art activity and supervised group games and play. Several computers are available in each room, as well as age appropriate games and books. We have an excellent Judaic library, a field and two playgrounds on site. Volunteer tutors are available from our congregation as needed to assist students with schoolwork.

We would like to hear your comments about our program and any information or experiences that may affect your child.

We are looking forward to working with you and having a great year with your child.

Shalom,
Cheryl Matis,
